Recycling is a large part of the Governor’s community. It is offered as an afternoon activity for students who choose to help out the community every afternoon. The program is run by science teacher Hal “Doc” Scheintaub.
This winter, Zach Brown ’10 and John Damianos ’12 have worked with Doc Scheintaub to help the community. Every Monday through Thursday, Zach, John and Doc have picked up recycling from each building around campus. On Monday they pick up the recycling from Math/Science, Phillips, the PAC, and the Library. On Tuesday they pick up the recycling from every dorm. On Wednesday they pick up from Frost, the Library, and the Student Center. On Thursday they finish up with Math/Science, the Student Center, the PAC and the Field House.
Zach has worked hard all winter and says, “He loves recycling; it’s a way of life.” John “likes working hard for a good cause.”
Others on campus appreciated the school’s commitment to “going green” and, in particular, the efforts of the recycling team. Staff in the Admissions Office “love seeing the recycling team very day working hard.” Ms. Toumayan of the Library staff thinks the team is “very efficient and reliable.”
Rain or shine the team drives from building to building in their truck, picking up the recycling and helping the community. Once the team has collected items to be recycled, Mr. Latini of the Buildings and Grounds staff crushes and compresses the recycling.
Students from the afternoon program started helping with recycling in December of 2008 and since then have earned more than $3,000 dollars for the school. They have picked up over 40.56 tons of recycling since then, averaging 3.12 tons a month.
Doc Scheintaub said that “over the years students have proved to be responsible to help run the school in terms of recycling.” Doc Scheintaub, Zach Brown, and John Damianos deserve a tremendous amount of praise and respect for all their hard work doing a great deed that helps our community.
