Founded in 1763, The Governor's Academy is the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the United States, educating young men and women in grades 9 through 12. 


Byfield, Massachusetts, 33 miles north of Boston, 5 miles from Newburyport, 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, next to the Great Atlantic Salt Marshes. 


49 buildings on 465 acres. Extensive facilities for athletics and visual and performing arts, as well as state-of-the-art library, computer centers, labs, student center and dining hall. There are nine dorm buildings that include mostly single rooms, as well as comfortable common areas. Campus buildings are connected by fiber optic technology.


More than 400 boys and girls. Approximately one-third of students are day students; two-thirds are boarders. In 2018-2019, our students came from 23 states and 18 countries including Canada, China, Dominica, Japan, Spain, Turkey, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand.


88 full-time faculty members. The student-faculty ratio is 5 - 1. 88% of faculty members live on campus. The average tenure of faculty members is 14 years. 

Academic Highlights

Average class size is 12 students. Governor's offers honors, advanced and Advanced Placement classes, as well as independent study. Foreign languages include Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. 


More than 50 interscholastic teams from varsity to thirds. Governor's holds a strong record in the ISL, Independent School League, arguably one of the most competitive prep leagues in the nation. 

Campus Life

25 extracurricular groups and activities. 


Recycling, composting, organic garden. Solar panels on the roofs of the gym and Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts. 

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for the 2018-2019 academic year is $61,500 for boarding students and $49,000 for day students. For the 2017-2018 school year, Governor's awarded nearly $4.8 million in financial aid; approximately 27% of students received financial assistance.

Please see Admission for more information. The deadline is January 15 for day candidates and January 31 for boarding candidates. We mail our admission decision letters on March 10. Any application received after January 31 will be considered if there are spaces available.
